Hebrew, an official language of Israel, belongs to the Semitic language family. Hebrew became an independent Semitic language between the 13th and 7th century B.C., departing eventually from the close Semitic dialects. The oldest literary source in Hebrew found until recently is «The Song of Deborah» dating back to the 12th century B.C. and the oldest inscription in Hebrew is the «Gezer Calendar» which arose in the 10th century B.C.

What is outstanding about Hebrew is that the language considered dead for eighteen centuries would become a language of daily communication, a state language of Israel, spoken by nearly 7 million nowadays.

Hebrew uses a Hebrew alphabet for writing, a consonant-only script of 22 letters. From the outset, Hebrew did not have letters standing for vowels, however several letters (for example, «aleph», «yod», «waw») tended to be used more towards signifying vowels, away from the consonants only. Hebrew is written from right to left and top-down, the letters do not connect together (not always the case, though, in hand writing). Vowels are expressed through diacritical symbols, combining dots and strokes around a letter (from above, below, left). In an overarching majority of texts diacritics are not used, reduced to religious texts, songs and verses, school and ulpan books, children books and occasionally in foreign words and differently pronounced words.

A peculiar feature of Hebrew was the need to re-invent many words and expressions since the language was considered dead, its revival to take place only in the 19th-20th centuries.
