Lithuanian is native for nearly three million, those who reside in Lithuania. Another 170 thousand living elsewhere speak Lithuanian fluently.
Lithuanian is a Baltic language of the Indo-European language family. The forefather of standard Lithuanian is considered to be Martynas Mažvydas (1510–1563) who printed the first Lithuanian book, Lutheran Catechism, in 1547 in Königsberg. From then on, Lithuanian is believed to start formation as a literary language (achieving its ultimate form only in the late 19th – early 20th century).
Compared to other Indo-European languages, Lithuanian came out to retain more ancient features in phonetics and morphology. It is suggested that the 13th – 14th centuries saw the formation of two major Aukštaitian and Samogitian dialects giving rise to their own sub-dialects. The north-west of today’s Lithuania is dominated by the Samogitian dialect and south-east by the Aukštaitian.
What is challenging in Lithuanian is mobile emphasis making differently accentuated words different in terms of meaning. Loanwords in Lithuanian are few, however, international words of Latin and Greek origin available in the language may bring about a problem in translation. The Tallinn-based ATCG Agency is always ready to offer simultaneous and consecutive interpretations from Lithuanian. Your negotiations with business partners will be conducted at a supreme level since our lady interpreters speak Lithuanian as well as native speakers.
Lithuanian has no articles. Three tenses are basically used (past, present, future; past iterative is less frequent). There is also one form in the subjunctive mood which may combine together with participles in the past tense. Lithuanian stands out as a language with the richest system of participles. A slightly modified Latin alphabet has been used to write in Lithuanian from the 16th century.
